Liquid-matter ferroelectrics: physical properties and topology of emerging polar nematic fluids

报告简介:

Magnetic and electric dipoles share similar symmetry, and they are expected to exhibit many common states and structures. Achieving electrically-polar matter states requires low material symmetry with a general requirement of solidity or crystallinity. Yet, while some polar states can be seen in polymer and crystalline materials, liquid-matter materials with high fluidity, thus high symmetry, had not been expected to exhibit polar nature. In this presentation, I will start with records of the recent discovery of liquid-matter ferroelectrics with liquid crystal nematicity to their unique physical properties and topological structures.

报告人简介:

Prof. Satoshi Aya received his Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD degrees from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2010, 2011, and 2014, respectively. Later, he worked as an engineer at Hitachi High-Technologies Corp. (2014-2015) and as a postdoctoral researcher at the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science (2015-2019) in Japan. In 2019, he joined the South China University of Technology (SCUT) as a principal investigator. His principal interests are the physicochemical properties of soft matter, particularly in liquid crystal physics, surface science, colloids, and electro-optical aspects of materials in liquid crystal states, etc. After joining SCUT, he published more than 40 papers, including the first or corresponding authored papers in Nat. Phys., PNAS, Sci. Adv., Nat. Commun., JACS, etc.
